Queer Art & Archives

Me 'n' the archive by AN

Upon visiting the Arquives (my first time as a user of an archive), I was inspired by the records in Japanese and about queer immigrants. The first file I happened to look at was a news article in the Toronto Star about the planning of Japanese internment camps that surfaced, indicating that they were planned before Pearl Harbor happened. Following this were more heartwarming records including pamphlets targeted toward Torontonian queer youth in various languages, as well as their counterparts targeting parents that are confused about queer matters. Overall, it made me think about intersectionality, the various spaces that marginalized groups take part in, and affect in the archive.

Taking inspiration from the work of Joynt and Schilt, I reflect on my visit in an audio journal, reading excerpts from records I accessed and adding my reactions and responses to them.
